HT2120D - International Classification of Diseases Coding II with Lab - 3 Credits

This course covers clinical vocabularies and classification systems, as well the principles and guidelines for using ICD-9-CM to code diagnoses and procedures. Students will gain an understanding of ICD as it is used in an inpatient and outpatient settings and its contribution to the severity of illness and case-mix analysis systems. Assignments and practical examples of patient records will provide practice in coding and sequencing of diagnoses. The applications of coding principles are also explored through the use of encoding software tools. (2 hours of lecture, 2 hours of lab per week)
